Career Journey

Sheetal's journey in archery began in 2021 when she was discovered by the Indian Army during a youth event. The army's Rashtriya Rifles unit recognized her potential and offered her support. This support was crucial, as it allowed her to pursue her passion for archery. Soon after, she joined an academy in Katra, about 200 kilometers from her home, to train under coaches Abhilasha Chaudhary and Kuldeep Wadhwan. They saw her determination and decided to help her become a competitive archer.

Initially, the coaches wanted to assist Sheetal with prosthetics. However, doctors informed them that prosthetics were not an option for her. Instead of giving up, Sheetal surprised everyone by demonstrating her ability to climb trees using her legs. This skill inspired her coaches to adapt their training methods. They researched and learned from the story of Matt Stutzman, an armless archer who used his legs for archery. This gave them the confidence to train Sheetal.

In just 11 months of training, Sheetal made her international debut at the 2022 Asian Para Games. She competed in the women's compound bow events and won two gold medals: one in the mixed doubles and another in the women's individual category. She also secured a silver medal in the women's doubles event. This achievement made her the first female armless archer to win medals at the Asian Para Games.

Sheetal's success did not stop there. In July 2023, she participated in the World Archery Para Championships held in the Czech Republic. There, she won a silver medal, which secured a quota for India at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. This made her the first female armless archer to win a medal at the Para World Championships. Her achievements have made her a symbol of hope and inspiration for many.

As she prepared for the Paris Paralympics, Sheetal focused on her training. She trains for six to seven hours every day, showing her commitment to her sport. She stated that she would not take a day off unless she was very sick. Her dedication and hard work have earned her numerous accolades, including the Arjuna Award in January 2024, which is one of the highest honors for Indian athletes.
